How does the transcription work?

Getting started with GeekBye

From download to your first live session in about five minutes. Do this once, before an interview, not during one.

Step 1

Install the app

Download the build for your platform and install it: drag it into Applications on macOS, or run the installer on Windows. GeekBye is a desktop app, not a browser extension — that is what makes the invisibility work.

Step 2

Sign in

Launch GeekBye and sign in with Google or with an email code. The app opens your browser to complete sign-in and then hands you back to the desktop app automatically. The free plan is active immediately — no card required.

Step 3

Grant permissions

GeekBye asks for two macOS permissions, and it cannot work without them. Approve them now so nothing pops up mid-interview.

Screen Recording — lets GeekBye read what is on your screen when you press the screenshot shortcut. Nothing is captured until you do.
Microphone — lets Listen transcribe you as well as the other speaker.

On macOS you may need to quit and reopen GeekBye after approving Screen Recording for the first time. On Windows, only the microphone prompt appears.

Check invisibility

Start a test meeting with yourself, share your whole screen, and look at the preview. GeekBye should not be there. If it is, the eye icon in the app toggles invisible mode — a red border means the app is currently visible.

Run your first session

Open something that looks like an interview question — a coding problem, a slide, a job description. Press the screenshot shortcut to capture it, then open chat and ask a follow-up. Start Listen when you want live transcription of the conversation. Everything stays in the overlay, on top of whatever you are doing.

Learn three shortcuts

These three cover almost everything. Practise them once so your hands know them under pressure.

If a shortcut collides with your editor, switch preset in Settings — Default, Shift, or Alt — instead of fighting the conflict.

Before your first real interview

Do a full dry run on a test call, including sharing your screen. Five minutes now beats a surprise later.
Move the overlay close to the area you are already looking at, so your eyes barely travel.
Transcription needs the network. On flaky Wi-Fi the app reconnects on its own and buffers audio, but a wired connection is calmer.
Use the headset you will actually interview with. Switching audio devices mid-session is supported, but it is one less thing to think about.
